2025 Mercedes-AMG G63 First Look Review: Luxury, Capability, And Performance Triple Threat (2024)

In the wake of Mercedes-Benz seemingly demoting the AMG GT from a V8 to a four-cylinder (in the case of the GT 43), the automaker has revealed an all new G-Class lineup. For 2025, the base G550 also loses the V8 in favor of an inline-six, but thankfully, the AMG G63 model retains the eight-cylinder engine. While it doesn't come with a bump in power, still putting out 577 horsepower and 627 lb-ft of torque, it does come with electric assistance now that sees performance specs improve: the new Mercedes-AMG G63 SUV can sprint from 0-60 three-tenths quicker than before, and it should even use less fuel to do so. And, with the addition of the MBUX infotainment system, the AMG G63 is now more than just an off-road icon. 45 years on, and the 2025 G63 is the plushest, most capable version yet.

When Is The 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63 Coming Out?

As far as the release date for the Mercedes-AMG G63 goes, the brand says it will arrive in dealerships in the USA in the second half of 2024.

2025 Mercedes-AMG G63 Estimated Price and Competition

The automaker is yet to reveal the price of the 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63, but an increase is expected. Current models have a starting cost of $179,000 MSRP before options and destination charges, so the new model breaching the $185k mark isn't unlikely.

Traditional rivals to the AMG G63 can be challenging to pin down, although the Land Rover Defender V8 can be considered a competitor. It makes 518 hp from its supercharged V8, but it's almost a full second slower to 60 mph. It's also not nearly as pricey as the 2025 AMG G63, maxing out at under $120k in its most expensive trim. A more appropriate competitor is on the cards, however, with the new Defender Octa waiting in the wings.

New Mercedes-AMG G63 Exterior and Colors

Although there are updates to the exterior of the 2025 Mercedes-AMG G63, you'll have to look carefully to spot them. Since the look of the Gelandewagen is one of the things that stand out, it's no surprise that Mercedes hasn't messed with it. Still, there are refreshed front and rear bumpers, an AMG-specific grille, and new air inlets with three vertical louvers. There is also new A-Pillar cladding and a spoiler lip on the roof's edge.

The headlights are standard adaptive multibeam LEDs, and the taillights feature LED tech, too. Of course, an AMG crest on the hood identifies the AMG G63, and - for the first time on the G-Class - the exterior mirrors now project the AMG logo. The G63 also gets an AMG fuel filler cap in silver chrome with black elements, and there are silver-painted brake calipers as standard. A new 20-inch wheel is standard in a five-twin-spoke design, but buyers will get to choose from six designs varying in size from 20 to 22 inches.

Mercedes doesn't explicitly state all the colors available for the Mercedes-AMG G63, but it does mention that Twilight Blue Metallic is new and that the G63 gets exclusive access to Manufaktur Hyper Blue Magno. We do think the Olive hue on the press images below is particularly suited to the G-Wagon, however. The AMG Exterior Carbon Fiber Package is available to buyers, which kits out the spare wheel cover, bumper inserts, and visual underride guard at the front and rear in carbon. This also adds a dark chrome radiator grille, carbon design mirror housings, and blacked-out housings for the headlights and indicators.

Mercedes-AMG G63 Dimensions

The dimensions for the 2025 Merc-AMG G63 show that it's longer and wider than the G550 but not quite as tall. Core measurements include a wheelbase of 113.8 inches and a total length of 191.9 inches. Its width comes in at 78.1 inches without mirrors, and it stands 77.6 inches tall. These measurements are pretty much on par with the outgoing model, although it's a little taller for the new model year.

Curb weight hasn't been confirmed by the automaker just yet, but given the current model already tips the scales at 5,842 pounds and the new model features some new electronic wizardry, it's not likely we'll see it weigh any less.

Mercedes-AMG G63 Engine/Powertrain and Performance

The base G-Class SUV may see changes to what powers it, but the AMG G63 gets the same engine we're familiar with, just paired to a new electrical system. That engine is a handcrafted AMG 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 supplemented by an integrated starter generator and 48-volt electrical system that puts out 577 hp and 627 lb-ft for all four wheels, regulated by a nine-speed automatic. The integrated starter generator provides a boost of 20 hp and 148 lb-ft at lower engine speeds. While there's no change to peak outputs, the AMG G63's 0-60 mph sprint time has dropped from 4.5 seconds on the outgoing model to 4.2 seconds. Top speed is limited to 137 mph, and the boxy SUV can tow up to 7,716 lbs.

The AMG Ride Control system with adaptive adjustable damping is standard on the G63, and with three damper maps, owners can customize how comfortable they want their ride to be. The AMG Active Ride Control suspension with active roll stabilization can be added as part of the AMG Offroad Package PRO, which, along with off-roading kit, also adds two additional off-road drive modes. The first of these is AMG Traction Pro, which can be selected in 'Rock' or 'Sand' mode and only when low-range gearing is active for maximum traction, and the second is AMG Active Balance Control, which allows roll stiffness of the SUV to be adjusted from low to rigid. The G-Wagon was, and is, still a capable off-roader, and now comes with a special Off-Road co*ckpit and Transparent Hood feature; together with the three mechanical differential locks, low-range gearing, and solid rear axle, tackling rough terrain should be easier than ever before.

Estimated Gas Mileage

The automaker hasn't made any claims about fuel economy just yet, but given it's the same base engine with the benefit of electric assistance, we can assume some improvements - and that's a positive, considering the rather awful EPA ratings of the 2024 model. On the city/highway/combined cycles, the current model achieves 13/16/14 mpg.

The new AMG G63 SUV has a fuel tank capacity of 26.4 gallons, so before taking any improvements into account, we can assume it'll manage at least 370 miles on a full tank.

Mercedes-AMG G63 Interior and Cargo

Fortunately, Mercedes has also made some minor improvements to the interior of the AMG G63, although these are so subtle you may miss them. On the G63, there are dual 12.3-inch displays running the MBUX software for the first time. These displays cover a driver's information cluster and a central display for infotainment. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are available, with at least one of those offered wirelessly. Augmented reality for navigation is standard.

Familiar favorites in the cabin are still in place, with special reference to the front passenger's grab handle, the circular air vents that echo the rounded headlights, and the three switches for the differential locks that take pride of place in the center stack. 64-color ambient lighting and extensive leather upholstery are standard, and an AMG Performance Steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather is also part of the package. What's new is the use of upgraded insulation materials which Mercedes promises to reduce noise inside the cabin substantially.

Mercedes hasn't stipulated interior colors and materials available to AMG G63 buyers, but current models are highly customizable and a range of trims and leathers is available. Multicontour seats will be available, too. Heated seats. tri-zone climate control, and a sunroof are standard features, and a Burmester 3D Surround Sound System with a satellite loudspeaker in the headliner will be included on these top-end models.

Interestingly, it seems cargo space in the new AMG G63 SUV has taken a bit of a knock: outgoing models have between 38.1 and 68.6 cubic feet of cargo volume, according to Mercedes, but the press information for the new version lists just 22.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats.
