Reverse Wine Snob reveals all the best wines below, including the ones to buy right now! Read on for our Complete Guide to Costco Wine.

Costco® is the number one wine retailer in the U.S. and just one look at their low wine prices should tell you why!

One of the main reasons is simply the tremendously slim margin Costco takes thanks to their membership model. Basically, they make their money on membership fees allowing them to keep product prices, including those on wine (and beer), very low. The Costco wine selection isn't the broadest but they do tend to bring in some very nice wines from all over the world (places like California, Washington, France, Italy, Australia, Argentina, Spain and Portugal to name a few), especially in the under $25 price point.

Costco Wine! The 2024 Guide To The Best Wines at Costco (1)

While many of the wines are available elsewhere (albeit at slightly higher prices) keep your eyes out for deals on lesser-known labels as well. Inventory of wines will vary by market and even by store within a market so at times you can find some low production wines available in an individual store. And if you see them, grab them -- turnover is very high so what's there today could very well be gone tomorrow.

Also, some states (AZ, CA, CO, CT, DE, HI, IN, KY, MA, MI, MN, NY, TX, and VT) won't allow membership clubs to limit alcohol sales just to members, so in those cases you don't even need to buy a membership to shop the wine section and benefit from its low prices.

Costco wine discounts are also a hot topic of discussion, and these are handled in two ways. Sales discounts on wine depend on the rules of your state. Some Costco regions show sale discounts on the shelf label, while some do not. Either way, however, you'll still be getting the lowest price. (The prices on wines in states that don't allow discounting are simply marked as the after discount price and not promoted as a discount.)

The second form of Costco wine discount is unadvertised. Any price that ends in .97 is a markdown, which means the price has been reduced from the original. Note however, the original price is never shown so the only way to know it has been marked down is to look for the .97. Furthermore, if there is an asterisk on the label (aka the "death star") that means it is a close-out and is not coming back. This is a great tip for shopping the rest of the store too — we’ve picked up some awesome deals on marked down items, but they go fast!

Lastly, when looking through the Costco wine selection, don't be afraid of their house brand of “Kirkland Signature” wines. These are extremely high-quality wines made by excellent wineries exclusively for Costco, cutting out the middleman to bring you even more savings. The only issue with these labels is that they tend to have a bit of a cult following so the low productions ones sell out fast, sometimes even within days. Our mantra on these is if you see them, especially the ones on our recommended list, buy them.
