Back in 2015, we took our girls to Walt Disney World for the first time. The girls were four and sixat that time. The very first ride at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, we went on as a family was Splash Mountain. Well, we found out very quickly that our youngest was not a fan of thrill rides. That fifty-foot drop I think sealed the deal. It also didn’t help that she sat up front!

So, while my husband and older daughter ended up going on some of the others, such as 7D Mine Train, I had to keep the 4-year-old entertained. So, we quickly learned that The Carousel and Dumbo were fan favorites for her.

She didn’t even really like It’s Small World yet. Why? Because she swore, it got dark in one spot. See our baby was afraid of the dark. Almost every ride other than The Carousel and Dumbo had some place that was dark in it. My poor husband was the recipient of our girl practically jumping into his lap head first on many of these dark spots. It became an ongoing thing to have her tear up on so many rides that that first trip.

I pretty much gave into it though and had to concede. Therefore, we ended up riding Dumbo a record amount of times in 2015. I can recall one time in particular where the young kid that was manning the ride pretty much let us go for a second and third time after hearing our tale of scared of the dark woe.

Finally, my youngest in the past year or so has become a bit braver. My girl even has ridden 7D Mine Train and Slinky Dog Dash! But Dumbo will always be the first love for her. Therefore, Dumbo has a special place in our hearts—always.

They are so very easy to make. I merely used vanilla cupcakes iced with vanilla icing as the base. Then with a little more frosting and fondant magic, I created an elephant or Dumbo face on our cupcakes. Add some candy eyes and what we ended up with was Dumbo Cupcakes.

A truly fun elephant and Disney circus-themed cupcake inspired by Dumbo.

Ingredients

  • 6 Prepared Cupcakes
  • 1 Can Whipped White Frosting
  • White Fondant
  • Edible Eyes
  • Black & Pink Food Coloring

Instructions

  1. Spread a thin layer of white frosting over the cupcakes and set aside.
  2. Take 2 chunks of fondant and knead each one for about 30 seconds just to soften them up. Add 1 drop of black food coloring to one and 1 drop of pink to the other. Fold one in half and start kneading the color in by hand. Then do the other one. You should now have one pink fondant and one grey fondant.
  3. Roll out the fondant about ¼ inch thick. Take about a 1-inch cap and cut out 12 grey circles and with about ½ inch cap, cut out 12 pink circles. Place the pink circles over the grey circles and pinch one side together, then cut the pinch end off. This will give you a straight edge on one side.
  4. Take the rest of the frosting and place in a bowl, add 1-2 drops of black food coloring and mix well. If you want it a darker shade of grey, then add a little more but be careful not to add to much at once.
  5. Add frosting into a quart size baggie or piping bag, cut corner just a little. Start with a small circle in the middle of the cupcake, then fill in the circle, next add a long thick trunk down the middle of the circle to the edge of the cupcake.
  6. Now, place a small amount of frosting in another baggie and cut a very tiny piece of the corner. At the bottom of the trunk, pipe on 3 small circles on top of each other so it looks like an open circle.
  7. Place two eyes on above the trunk and stick on 2 ears. Place the straight edge towards the frosting.
  8. Serve and Enjoy!!
