Pension – An Invaluable Benefit

Your membership with NYCERS provides a guaranteed income for life upon retirement, as well as the opportunity to provide a continued retirement benefit to a designated beneficiary upon your death after retirement.

There is an additional 10% early distribution tax penalty for members who are under the age of 59½. Your Non-Performing Loan will no longer be insured against your death. If a beneficiary is due to receive a benefit, the amount of that benefit will be reduced by the amount of the outstanding loan.

Your password includes the characters 'Ana-' followed by your birthday (MMDDYY) and the last four digits of your Social Security Number (SSN). For security reasons, the system will prompt you to change your password the first time you log in.

The pension payments may either end at the participant's death (referred to as a single-life pension) or they may continue to pay benefits to a beneficiary in a reduced amount (referred to as a joint-life or survivor pension).

When the retiree dies, the sur- viving designated beneficiary will be paid the same retirement allowance for his or her lifetime. If the designated beneficiary predeceases the retiree, all payments would then end upon the death of the retiree.

The average pension received by “full-career” retirees was $57,290, compared to $57,516 for last year's retirees. Among all 156,061 NYCERS retirees, 2,296 received six-figure pensions, a 15 percent increase from the 1,993 in 2021.

Most NYSLRS pensions are subject to federal income tax (some disability benefits are not taxable). NYSLRS pensions are not subject to New York State or local income tax, but if you move to another state, that state may tax your pension.

A death benefit is a payout to the beneficiary of a life insurance policy, annuity, or pension when the insured person or annuitant dies. With life insurance policies, death benefits are not usually subject to income tax and named beneficiaries typically receive the death benefit as a lump-sum payment.

How do NYCERS calculate pension? ›

1.5% times FAS times the number of years of Allowable Service in the Transit Authority in excess of 30 years of such service. In addition to these percentages, a key factor in the calculation of your retirement benefit is your FAS. In general, your FAS is a three-year average of wages earned.

You may choose to: Terminate your membership and withdraw your accumulated contributions plus interest; or. Leave your contributions in your account and qualify for a retirement benefit when you are age 55.

You will receive your first full pension check, which will include any appropriate retroactive adjustments, approxima- tely 2 months after we receive your retirement option select- ion. If NYCERS has an unusually large number of retirement applications filed at one time, the process may take longer.

The amount you can borrow is based on your contributions (plus interest) in your NYCERS account(s), less any outstanding loan balance. A loan cannot exceed 75% of your NYCERS account(s). Are there any fees?
