Ham and Cheese Pinwheels

If you're a fan of our Hawaiian Ham and Cheese Sliders, you're gonna love this fun twist on that classic sandwich. These Ham and Cheese Pinwheels just might become your new favorite! 🙂

A lot of times pinwheel recipes will have sliced ham, flour tortillas, a layer of cream cheese mixture, and then will have the ham and cheese rolled up into a tortilla roll. This recipe is a bit different in that it IS a ham roll, but uses pizza crust instead of the usual tortilla. (I think it would be fun to try with crescent rolls too!)

This recipe is great for a party appetizer or for a quick Summer lunch – it's also PERFECT for a quick dinner on a busy night!

Ingredients needed for Ham and Cheese Pinwheels:

  • refrigerated pizza crust
  • thinly sliced deli ham
  • Swiss cheese slices
  • butter
  • brown sugar
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • Dijon mustard
  • poppy seeds

How do I make a ham and cheese pinwheel?

Go ahead and preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Then, you're going to want to start by unrolling the pre-made pizza dough into a rectangle that's about 13×18-inches.

Next, top the dough with the ham, followed by the slices of cheese.

After that, roll the longer side of the dough up to form a long roll (like you would for homemade cinnamon rolls). You'll then cut into about 12 slices.

Place the pinwheels in a greased baking dish. I just used some cooking spray, but feel free to use whatever you typically do to grease your baking dishes.

Next, combine the butter, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard and poppy seeds in a small pan. Heat and whisk this until the butter is melted and everything is well combined. If you feel like 1/2 cup of butter is a bit much, 1/4 cup will work just fine as well.

Once you've tried this combo, you can even add in other spices that your family enjoys – try onion powder, garlic powder, some bell pepper. Even ranch dressing or sun dried tomato sounds delicious. OH – or maybe top with some parmesan cheese too!

Pour the butter mixture over the pinwheels.

Finally, bake for about 25 minutes or until your crust is golden brown.

These pinwheel appetizers are perfect for game day, lunch, or a quick dinner, and the best part is you only need about 20 minutes to whip them up. They'll quickly become one of your family favorite recipes.

Can you freeze ham and cheese pinwheels?

You sure can!

Go ahead and bake the ham and cheese pinwheels according to the recipe instructions, let cool and wrap in aluminum foil. When your ready to eat them, thaw and reheat the pinwheels wrapped in foil in a 350°F oven for about 15 minutes. Yum!

You can also store these in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours – just warm up in the microwave or oven to enjoy.

What kind of bread do you use to make pinwheels?

We loved the way that these turned out in our recipe using pizza dough, but any type of bread that is flat or can be flattened would work perfectly fine. With our recipe, the dough needs to be cooked, so keep that in mind when you are choosing what type of bread to use for your pinwheels.
