Abstract
This chapter describes the dynamic relationship between Paul O'Dwyer and John McGettrick during the tumultuous political landscapes of the 1960s and early 1970s. It tells their story, beginning in Chicago in August 1968, amidst the charged atmosphere of the Democratic National Convention, where a young McGettrick first encountered O'Dwyer. Drawn to O'Dwyer's charismatic presence and commitment to civil rights and peace, McGettrick, a former Robert Kennedy volunteer, joined O'Dwyer's team during his Senate and subsequent city council campaigns in New York City. Despite O'Dwyer's loss in the Senate race, McGettrick became his dedicated driver and aide during his successful city council bid in 1973. The chapter underscores O'Dwyer and McGettrick's journey together, highlighting O'Dwyer's resilience in the face of political challenges and McGettrick's steadfast commitment to social justice causes.
