Perhaps one of the most famous things from the British Virgin Islands, this Soggy Dollar painkiller recipe has been a popular drink for a long time. Originally made with Pusser’s rum, there are also hints of coconut taste. Honestly, how tropical could this one get?

Ingredients
- Pusser’s rum — 2 oz.
- Pineapple juice — 4 oz.
- Cream of coconut — 1 oz.
- Ground nutmeg — 1 pinch.
- Orange juice — 1 oz.
- Ice — 1 pack.
Instructions
- Fill your cocktail shaker with ice.
- Combine the Pusser’s rum, pineapple juice, cream of coconut, and orange juice in your shaker.
- Shake the mixture for half a minute.
- Place the other half of the ice into your serving glasses.
- Pour your drink on top of the ice.
- Garnish with a pinch of ground nutmeg.
Substitutions
- Pusser’s rum — Most painkiller recipes call for Pusser’s rum. It provides a dark, but rich flavor to your drink, as it blends in well with the other ingredients, most of them being fruit juices like pineapple and orange.
Still, it’s a strong liquor, with high proof that has the potential to hit you hard, especially if you are not an experienced drinker. Considering that, when mixed with the juices and all the rum will hide well, you could easily be a few drinks in when you realize that and it might be too late. Hence, you might want to look for other alternatives. Other dark rums like Myer’s and Mount Gay will do a good job of replacing Pusser’s rum, and you might also want to consider Lemon Hart.
- Cream of coconut — This one is definitely a must. It’s not a surprise that the original Soggy Dollar painkiller recipe uses cream of coconut since it provides a creamy and smooth texture to your drink. Still, you would also be fine with coconut milk, although the texture of your drink would be considerably different. Coconut water and regular dairy milk are other alternatives, but keep in mind that coconut milk would probably be better than these two.
- Pineapple and orange juice — If you wish, try using tropical juice instead of pineapple juice; something like mango, papaya, or maybe even guava juice would all do fine. And when it comes to orange juice, if you’d set your mind on finding a substitute, this time we’d recommend another citrus juice such as grapefruit, mandarin, and tangerine.
- Ground nutmeg — If you’re looking for something to top your painkiller drink, there is simply nothing better than ground nutmeg, with its savory and rich flavor. But, if you’re looking to make some substitutions, you could get away with ground cinnamon, ground ginger, and maybe even with allspice.
Variations
- Painkiller Martini — Although this is not exactly the original Soggy Dollar painkiller recipe, still, this one’s a pretty cool twist. Garnish with an olive and use tequila instead.
- PG-13 painkiller — Well, this one’s a non-alcoholic drink, but that doesn’t mean it’s only for kids alone. You could replace the alcohol with any light liquor, especially if you don’t prefer a strong drink. If you’re looking for something lighter, this one's for you.
