He has expressed a preference for the Los Angeles Lakers, but is expected to go to Minnesota, Orlando or Dallas since they had the league's worst records and have the best chance of winning the NBA draft lottery May 17.

Sweden recovers, wins hockey title Sweden, which barely made the final round, won its second consecutive world hockey championship Sunday in Prague, Czechoslovakia, with a 5-2 victory over Finland. Peter Forsberg, Roger Hans-son, Lars Karlsson and Arto Blomsten, four of 16 rookies on the young Swedish team, all scored along with Mikael Anders-son, a late roster addition from the Hartford Whalers. The Swedes had to tie the United States, 4-4, just to clinch the fourth and last quarterfinal spot from Pool A. Then they won, 2-0, over Russia, which won the Olympic gold medal as the Unified Team in February, before knocking out Switzerland, 4-1, in the semifinals. Czechoslovakia beat Switzerland, 5-2, for the bronze medal.

Associated Press SuperSonics' Ricky Pierce (22) drives past Jeff Malone of the Jazz during the Sonlcs' 104-98 NBA Western Conference semifinal playoff victory. Knicks tie series Sabatini victory is message for Seles Second-seeded Gabriela Sabatini of Argentina beat top-seeded Monica Seles of Yugoslavia, 7-5, 6-4, Sunday to win the Italian Open in Rome. It was the fourth Italian title for Sabatini and the second straight over Seles, ranked No. 1 in the world. It also served notice that Sabatini is after Seles' title in the French Open, also played on clay courts.

"I'm feeling stronger than I ever felt," said Sabatini, who changed her tactics and saved three set points to turn around the match. Neither woman had lost a set in the tournament and Seles looked to keep her record that way as she raced to a 5-2 lead. Sabatini then began to change her game, hitting high bouncing groundstrokes that kept Seles well back, or rushing the net, good for eight points in the match, many at key moments. "The match was close but Gaby just played better on the close points," Seles said. "I stopped playing my game and turned defensive." Top-seeded Stefan Edberg of Sweden rallied to beat Carlos Costa of Spain, 7-5, 7-6 (9-7), and third-seeded Michael Stich of Germany beat second-seeded countryman Boris Becker, 6-1, 6-1, to advance to the final of the German Open in Hamburg.

The final in the rain-plagued tournament will be held today. Fourth-seeded MaliVai Washington, who had lost in the semifinals the last two years, won the U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships in Charlotte, N.C., with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Clau-dio Mezzadri of Switzerland. five-stage Tour de Romandie through western Switzerland. Hampsten finished in 22 hours, 50 minutes, 35 seconds, which was 23 seconds ahead of Miguel Indurain of Spain, winner of the 1991 Tour de France.

Has O'Neal ruled out Timberwolves? The agent for Louisiana State center Shaquille O'Neal denied Sunday a report that he has sent a letter to the National Basketball Association saying O'Neal would refuse to play for the Minnesota Timberwolves. "The report is completely inaccurate," Leonard Armato said. "The Timberwolves don't even have his rights, so why would we send such a letter?" A newspaper reported Saturday that Armato has sent a letter to the NBA and the Timberwolves saying O'Neal is prepared to sit out the season if drafted by Minnesota. A sports agent who spoke on condition of anonymity was the source for the story. Officials for the NBA and the Timberwolves, who had the worst record in the NBA this past season, said Friday they hadn't heard of such a letter.

Timber Aldag leads pack after uphill finish Rolf Aldag of Germany won the third stage in a massive uphill pack finish and surprising Dave Mann of Britain kept his percarious overall lead for the third straight day Sunday in the Tour Du Pont bicycle race. Aldag, 23, beat countryman Peter Hilse, by about 15 feet in the 140.3-mile Pocono Mountains to Hershey, road race in 6 hours, 20 minutes, 47 seconds. "I came around the final corner fifth, but it was very close," said Aldag, who won two stages and finished third overall last year. "Uwe Preissler hit my wheel and I thought I was going to crash. When the others began to sprint, I did, too." Thomas Craven was third.

Those in the main finishing group, which included lOth-place Greg LeMond, were all credited with the same finishing time as was the rest of the main pack. Mann holds a .74 second lead over Stephen Swart of New Zealand. LeMond, the three-time Tour de France winner, is third, 12 seconds behind. Andrew Hampsten became the first American to win the NBA PLAYOFFS in overtime, and Cleveland spoiled the return of Larry Bird, ending the Celtics' 20-game winning streak at Boston Garden. Nance scored 32 points, Mark Price 24, Brad Daugherty 20 and John Williams 18 as Cleveland evened the Eastern Conference semifinal, 2-2, with Game 5 scheduled on the Cavaliers' homecourt Wednesday night.

Even Bird could not save the day for Boston, missing a layup with 2 seconds left that could have sent the game into a second overtime. Cleveland, which had lost 11 of 14 previous games at the Garden and was 2-31 on the parquet floor since Bird's NBA career began in 1979, blew a 13-point third-period lead, then battled back from a five-point deficit in the fourth quarter. Associated Press The New York Knicks prospered with Patrick Ewing on the bench Sunday night, and the Chicago Bulls faltered with Coach Phil Jackson off the bench. Xavier McDaniel, Gerald Wil-kins and John Starks each out-scored Ewing, their all-star teammate, and the Knicks pulled even in their playoff series with the defending National Basketball Association champions, beating them, 93-86, after Jackson was ejected late in the third quarter. "We feel we can beat these guys, but we have to give it a concerted effort like we did tonight," said McDaniel, who scored 24 points.

Jackson wasn't at courtside when the Knicks snapped the Bulls' NBA playoff-record road winning streak at eight. New York also snapped Chicago's seven-game winning streak at Madison Square Garden. Sunday night's outcome tied the best-of-seven series, 2-2, with Game 5 to be played at Chicago Stadium Tuesday night. Ewing sat out the last 5 minutes, 29 seconds of the third quarter and Gao Min, the 1988 Olympic 3-meter springboard gold medalist, won the 3-meter championship Sunday as Chinese divers swept the titles at the Alamo International diving meet in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Cheever, one of five drivers with a chance to gain positions at the front of the tentative 33-car lineup when time ran out on first-day qualifying Saturday, wedged his Ford-Cosworth XB-powered Lola between pole-winner Guerrero and Mario Andretti in the front row for the 76th edition of the race.

Four of five drivers still eligible for the pole ran Sunday when qualifying resumed at noon. But Guerrero, who set the benchmark of 232.482 Saturday in a Buick-pow-ered Lola, was unable to celebrate his sixth career pole and first since 1987 until teammate Jim Crawford pulled his car out of line, closing out first-day qualifying. Crawford, the fastest driver in practice with several unofficial laps over 233, blew his second engine in as many days near the end of Sunday's morning warmup. His crew scrambled to replace the engine in about 45 minutes a nearly impossible task. They came up about 10 minutes short and crewman Mike Perkins had a foot broken when run over by Crawford's car as it was hustled back to the pits.

Guerrero, 33, who spent 17 days up in the middle of the third row in the tentative lineup at 224.838. For the pole Guerrero collected $150,000 and a van worth about $30,000. The younger Andretti, who had also been over 232 in practice, said: "I'm very disappointed. The car worked great, but the writing was on the wall this morning. We were down on power.

I don't think that it was the weather conditions. We were just down on power." Also among the second-day qualifiers were two four-time Indy winners, 57-year-old A.J. Foyt and 52-year-old Al Unser. After Andretti closed out first-day qualifying, Foyt opened the second-day session by qualifying for a record 35th consecutive Indy start. Foyt, who ended Saturday's session in frustration with a blown engine after three laps above 226, slowed down Sunday but got into the lineup solidly at 222.798.

"I had no practice this morning," he said. "I went out and took two slow laps. I don't care if you're running 200 or 230, it's hard to get it going at my age and just go out there and try to qualify with no practice, 111 tell you. Cheever, a former Formula One regular, was the only one of Sunday's qualifiers able to break into the front row.
