Taco Wraps - Spicy Mexican Tortilla Cheeseburger Wrap Recipe (2024)

This recipe for taco wraps takes the tastes of cheeseburgers and spicy tacos and combines them into one tasty Mexican tortilla recipe. This is one of my husband’s favorite 30 minute meals.

Do you love the taste of tacos? If so, you’ll love this delicious lunch time meal. (See my easy taco melts for another tasty taco flavored idea.)

For today’s recipe, I started with the idea of cheeseburger wraps and then noticed the chili peppers growing in my garden and ended up with a more spicy cheeseburger taco recipe.

This recipe lets us swap the higher calorie hard taco shell for a soft tortilla to make a wrap version of tacos!

Are Wraps Healthy?

A taco wrap, by nature is a recipe that is full of fat and carbs. Many tortilla wraps contain more calories and carbohydrates than two slices of bread!

Add to that full fat cheese and regular ground beef and you have a very heavy meal that is full of fat and calories.

If you have followed the recipes on my blog, you will know that I try to “slim down” or otherwise make my recipes in a more healthy way.

How do I make these Mexican tortilla wraps more healthy?

Even with a heavy recipe, it is possible to lighten it up and make it more healthy. These are the steps I took:

  • I used a lower carb wrap that is also low in calories. I chose Xtreme wellness whole wheat wraps with flax seed – just 50 calories, 0g of fat and 16g carb. (also only 1 WW point!)
  • I chose a light Mozzarella cheese from Trader Joe’s. It melts well and has great flavor.
  • My ground beef is the 96% lean type, which keeps the calories and fat down.
  • I limited the oil to just enough to keep the ingredients from sticking.
  • I used Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. This saves calories and fat and adds protein to the healthy tortillas recipe.

The ingredients for the tortilla wrap fillings

Look at the colors of these ingredients! It’s a long list but most of them are in a normal pantry. My mouth is eagerly awaiting to see what happens when they are combined.

  • olive oil
  • lean ground beef
  • garlic
  • onion
  • small Jalapeno peppers
  • beef broth
  • light mozzarella cheese
  • spinach leaves
  • tomato
  • Greek yogurt
  • Xtreme Wellness tortilla wraps

You’ll also need some seasonings to flavor the taco wraps.

  • taco seasoning
  • yellow mustard
  • ketchup
  • Worcestershire sauce

You can use store bought taco seasoning or make these wraps with your own homemade taco seasoning mix.

Start by browning the ground beef in a small amount of oil until it is no longer pink.

In the same pan, add the onions, garlic and jalapeño peppers until the vegetables are tender and translucent. I used 3 small peppers, and my hamburger wraps were pretty spicy (but not over the top spicy.)

You can use less peppers if you don’t like as much heat. This takes just about 5 minutes!

Now it’s time to add some flavorings. In go the ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce along with your taco seasonings. Stir to combine the flavor a few minutes.

I added some beef broth at this stage when I was tasting to keep the spice mixture just right for my taste. i used a half cup. Your mileage may vary!

Let’s make the wraps!

We’ve only been cooking about 15 minutes and it’s already time to roll all those flavors into one delicious wrap!

You can either wrap the tortilla ingredients and then heat in the microwave, or heat the tortillas first and then wrap the ingredients.

The cheese won’t melt quite as much if you heat the tortillas first, but they will be easier to handle.

Lay out a wrap and add ground beef. Add tomatoes, cheese, spinach and some Greek Yogurt. don’t go too close to the edges to make wrapping the tortilla easier.

Note: If you position the fillings 2/3 of the way over to start, wrapping is easier!

How do these taco wraps taste?

These healthy tortilla wraps are savory and full of flavor. The jalapeño peppers add some spice but it’s not too much heat.

My husband likes very spicy foods and me, not so much, so they were a good compromise. You can add a bit of hot sauce if you like more heat.Taco Wraps - Spicy Mexican Tortilla Cheeseburger Wrap Recipe (9)

They are great the first day and also tasted good the next day as well. I just heated the left over fillings and wraps the second day and we enjoyed them for lunch.

What to serve with these spicy cheeseburger wraps

These wraps are fine to serve on their own, but if you want to make more of a meal out of them, you can add one of these sides:

  • Spicy Mexican rice
  • Spicy Minestrone soup
  • Garbanzo bean Salad
  • Cucumber Melon Salad

Serving Idea: You can also heat these and let them cool and then slice into pinwheels to make a taco wraps appetizer for a party!

Want to make these taco wraps even lighter?

The calorie count on these wraps is already low, but if you want to save a few more calories, switch over to ground turkey or ground chicken for an even lighter wrap recipe.

How many calories in a taco wrap?

The full nutritional breakdown can be found under the recipe card below, but these wraps are great for those dieting.

They have only 279 calories each and are low in saturated fat, high in fiber and very high in protein.
